Initially, Ian Oberem declared his intention to combat monkey abuse in Cambodia by building a sanctuary in South Africa and relocating monkeys from Cambodia to South Africa. Born Free SA initially claimed they did not rely on donations for their campaigns. However, Born Free SA then used the plight of monkeys in Cambodia to help them garner significant global attention, resulting in donations totaling $162,050 in a short period of time.
After raising the funds, they abruptly changed focus and stated that the funds would be used for animals in South Africa, with no plans to combat the abuse and torture of monkeys in Cambodia and establish a sanctuary for these animals. Subsequently, they have removed information about this initiative from their website. This behavior raises concerns about potentially fraudulent activities, and there should be transparency regarding the utilization of the funds raised.
